Nowadays, our lives can be so hectic that we barely even get the chance to stop and breathe. It can be times like these that make us feel so run down and worn out, that we can practically make ourselves ill. So, with this in mind, it must be times like these that we take a time-out with ourselves to focus on true ‘self care’.
And no, I don’t mean scrolling through social media with the TV on in the background. I mean actual self care. The type of self care where you zone out from reality and focus on nothing except yourself. Surprisingly, this is something that so many people struggle with. Life is hectic. It isn’t expected of you to have hours to spare each day to do things for yourself, but the beauty of self care is that it can be for as little as 5 minutes, or if needs must, it can be incorporated into another task.
Tip No. 1: Plan it into your diary.
Okay, this might sound a little daft when you first read it, but bear with me. Once something is physically written in my planner, I don’t go back. (Actually, I can’t go back, once its written in pen that’s the final straw, no scribbling allowed!) If you live a highly organized life and feel as though you barely have the chance to just stop and breathe, plan into your diary just 15 minutes every few days to do something that you really love. If it’s there, you’ll do it.
Tip No. 2: Pamper yourself.
A face mask. A bubble bath. A scented candle and snuggly pyjamas. Whatever floats your boat when it comes to pampering yourself, just go for it. There is no right or wrong. And there is nothing better after a long and stressful day, than coming home and doing something to wind yourself down, and feel calm and relaxed.
Tip No. 3: Check in.
Be self-aware. Check in with yourself, your emotions, how your day was, what made you feel stressed and what you did to make yourself happy. Designate a certain time slot every week for self-reflection, and focus on making each week better than the last.
Tip No. 4: Treat yourself.
Who doesn’t love treating themselves?! And no, I don’t just mean online shopping and spending a lot of money. (Although that’s allowed every now and then, isn’t it? Everything in moderation!) Instead, you can treat yourself by cooking your favourite meal, lighting your favourite scented candles whilst you work at home, or taking yourself out for a tasty coffee in your favourite coffee shop. There are a number of ways to take time out for yourself, and this can differ for everyone!
