Mindful Mondays: Walking

Welcome to Mindful Monday’s!

From now on, every Monday I am going to give you a heartfelt post about mindfulness relating to a specific topic. My aim is that this will give you a number of different things to be mindful about, and make you aware of how easy it really is to incorporate mindfulness into your everyday lives.

Today, the focus is going to be on walking.

Walking. It’s something we all do every day. This is exactly why it is something that we should be mindful about. Walking can be an extremely calm exercise to carry out, but we so often depict it as boring, and just another mode of travel to get from one place to the next.

Being mindful whilst we’re walking can work wonders for your mental wellbeing and emotional wellness. ‘Feeling at one with nature’, as it is so often put, can really put your mind in check, especially if you have a lot going on around you in terms of stress and worry. The previous weekend, I went to the Lake District and spent a lot of time walking and taking in the beautiful views of the lakes and the mountains. I came back home feeling refreshed and revitalised, and ready to grab a hold of life with both hands again.

Things to focus on:

  • What do you see around you when you take a walk?
  • What do you hear when you step away from traffic and other distractions?
  • What do you feel when you take step after step on the grassy earth?
  • What do you smell in the air when you’re surrounded by trees and flowers and fields?
  • What do you taste when you breathe in the air enveloping you?

Taking a walk is a simple practice of self-care and can have a huge impact on your wellbeing. Put yourself first. Do something for you this week.

  1. An enjoyable article on walking and I agree with the benefits you include. Being mindful whilst you walk would require you to be walking alone not so ? And somewhere where you wouldn’t have to cross busy streets
    The picture which you have with the walker up in those beautiful hills, now that would be a place for mindful walking.

      Usually alone yes, but it doesn’t have to be so. I often walk with company and can still take a few moments to take in the air and the earth around me:)

      Yes, this was when I went to the Lake District last week – it was beautiful and definitely got my mind in check!

  2. One of the best advantages of living in the Peak District is that I get to go on some amazing walks where you literally feel on top of the world with the breathtaking scenery.

    It’s very similar to the Lake District but with a lot less water lol.

    My walks are definitely far from boring and I always feel refreshed after every short hike. Sometimes it’s just great to withdraw from society for a short while (even if mobile phone signal is lost along the way).

    Whether you choose to climb the peaks or just explore the English countryside at ground level, you can truly learn to appreciate the surroundings and smells, etc.

      Wow, I’m extremely envious that you live in such a beautiful place! It really is amazing how being amongst the hills can make you feel more grounded and revitalised:)

      Being away from technology is another factor to this, sometimes I think we need to detach ourselves, even for a little while!

  3. That is a beautiful picture along with a beautiful article. Mindfulness is a great practise is especially useful when walking as a lot of us tend to get a bit too much into our heads.Walking just is too simple for most of us that we drift off completely.

    Something that I like to promote is called focusing on the inner body which basically involves us tuning into our body movements completely so the mind stops

      Yes that’s very true; so many of us forget the simple things in life!
